This meeting was rather eventful but I think the weather might have made attendance lower than usual. Because it was a smaller group we had a chance to chat about things and we did an informal physics-based coding session, making some boostpads but I think it works better as a bounce pad: Big Thanks To Lance So I mentioned some changes: First off our fearless leader Lance Tipton has been very busy lately and so he has decided to hand over the reigns to Chris Hill (me). I’d like to thank Lance for starting this group and keeping it going...
We’ll be having our monthly casual meetup to chat and talk about games (and perhaps game dev đ ). Check out the details below. You can always find the latest scheduled meetups on meetup.com. Don’t know much about game dev and want to know where to start? Come on by and chat! There are quite a few knowledgeable folks that will be there to give you some sage tips. http://www.meetup.com/Tucson-Game-Dev/events/231569968/
Tomorrow Thu the 9th is our monthly casual meetup at Cartel Coffee on Campbell. We have been talking in our new Slack channel (email me for an invite!) and since our new game will be developed in Unity there are some questions about how Unity works. So in addition to having some coffee and chilling out I will give a quick overview of Unity to those interested. We’ll be in a coffee shop so this will be quite informal. Come on by and say hi! http://www.meetup.com/Tucson-Game-Dev/events/231365998/
We had a pretty awesome May meeting. Thanks to all who participated. And OMG thanks Lucy for remembering to take photos! Since some could not come by and want the vitals I’ll break it down. Presentation If you didn’t know, we are working together to make a game and this was the kickoff. First we had a quick presentation to talk about what we were going to do. You can download the slide deck here. After chatting about some ideas, we voted on the best. Lastly we collectively brainstormed what the game would be. We left the meeting with homework: Explore the game concept and come...
Tonight we wil be chatting at Cartel Coffee on Cambell. Come on by and talk shop. A few of us might be working towards some game ideas as well! http://www.meetup.com/Tucson-Game-Dev/events/230472219/
Planes, Trains & Automobiles This month Greg & Drew gave us a sneak peek into their game development process of Trains, Planes & Automobiles. Not only did they show off how they’ve been developing the game, Greg shared some key insights into the business of games, including how he set up the legal licensing of the game (which is based on the board game of the same name). They talked about some of the key multi-player features they wanted to hit, because getting the balance for multiplayer right is always important. Then they showed the game in development itself, which looked...
Coming up on Friday is our first ever casual meetup. Unlike our meetings which generally have a presentation and then a bit of socializing, this is 100% chit-chat. Got some burning questions you want answered? Want to talk with some Tucsonans about game development? Come on down and say hi. This is a chance for developers, designers and artists to relax and talk shop. http://www.meetup.com/Tucson-Indie-Game-Development-Meetup/events/230038959/
Come join us tomorrow night! Randall Montgomery will be presenting Swift and SpriteKit. Swift is Apple’s new programming language which is their replacement for Objective-C. SpriteKit is Apple’s sprite-based rendering system, which is more game-focused than their UIKit framework. Randall has put up some files if you have a mac and would like to follow along. Check out his github repository below: https://github.com/rclayborn/SpriteKitCookbook For more information on the meeting, check out the Meetup.com page: http://www.meetup.com/Tucson-Indie-Game-Development-Meetup/events/229124839/
We had our February meeting and a solid presentation on Game AI from Thomas Palmer. For those who didn’t get a chance to go here are his slides: Check out the slides from the presentation here. For those who might think that Game AI might be a difficult topic: Tom made it accessible because he knows his stuff. He has a PhD in Computer Science specializing in AI and machine learning. The conversational tone meant that we talked through some of the finer points. We stayed clear of getting bogged down in code and focused on topics that matter (such as what is...
